Day Cruise to Caño Island

The Biological Reserve Caño Island is part of Corcovado National Park, 17 km off the western tip of the Osa Peninsula.  The 300-hectare island is of interest primarily for its inshore coral reefs and its importance as a pre-Columbian cemetery.  There are many tombs and artifacts , pestles , corn-grinding tables, and granite spheres (bolas), gathering moss in the rainforest undergrowth.

Among the island’s residents are boa constrictors, giant frogs, and three mammal species (marsupial, the paca and bat).  Birds include coastal and oceanic species as well as rainforest inhabitants, including a vast array of hummingbirds.

The island is ringed by secluded white-sand beaches which attract Olive Ridley Turtles.  Snorkelers can see brilliant tropical fish, moray eels, sea cucumbers and small reef sharks among the coral beds.  Offshore waters teem with common and bottle-nosed dolphins, manta rays, and humpback, pilot and sperm whales.  About 5800 hectares of ocean are designated as part of the reserve.
